#KiDay Playlist 2016

Happy Ki Day to you!!!

I'm far from a vocalist, but I love music, so I tend to express myself through it. Every year around my birthday I create a playlist. Usually it starts off as my soundtrack for the summer, but when my birthday comes around, I trim it down to just the songs that meant a lot or just reminded me of how my personal year went. Some are good, some are bad, but they all take me to a certain place within the last year and regardless of where I was when I heard the song, I'm here now!! So in the spirit of Ki Day, I'm going to share a snippet of my playlist with you! With these 15 songs, I'm going to give you:

*The artist- Name of the song

*Favorite lyric

*Why I chose it.

I hope you enjoy and maybe you'll discover a new fav!😊 (I don't only listen to gospel music, so some of these songs have colorful language).

1. Kehlani- CRZY

'All this I've been through and it made me more of an assassin

I kill 'em, I kill 'em, I kill 'em with compassion.'

I found this song a couple of weeks ago, but it's been in heavy rotation ever since. This past year was hard, but this song made me reflect and realize that despite all of it, I'm here, I'm stronger because of it, and this is only the beginning.

2. Kierra Sheard- You Make me Better

'time after time you've made ways for me

you open closed doors that was shut in my face put my mind at ease'

Kierra Sheard is one of my favorite artists!! I got to see here a few weeks ago and even though it was a little bumpy, overall it was an amazing experience. When I heard this song on her new EP, I played it over and over.  It was just a reminder that not only is God paying attention even when it doesn't feel like it, but that no one will love me the way He does. I know that I wouldn't be nearly as dope as I am if it wasn't for God.🙌🏾🙌🏾

3. Jazmine Sullivan- If You Dare

'Stop thinking small when you're larger than life

You're amazing, so am I

Let's dress up fancy and drink wine

Let's go crazy, don't be scared
Cause we can conquer  the world, we can conquer the world
If you dare.'

Jazmine Sullivan is a powerhouse!! Her voice is crazy, her style is always on point, and she seems super down to earth. I've been listening to this album for a while, but this song is what inspired this year's playlist! It reminded me that we all have something to offer to the world and its our responsibility to figure it out and give it fully.

4. Melanie Fiona- This Time

'This time, I’m doing much better

Love you like I never

Ever loved you before'

This past year I've done a lot of reflecting in the relationship department. This is this first time in a while that I've felt like I was ready and open to one. Thinking back, there are a lot of things I would do differently in my past relationships and I'm determined to get it right this time😉.

5. Whitney Houston- How Will I Know

 'There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of

Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love?'

So now that I'm ready to try this relationship thing out, I reconnected with someone that is really dope. He's everything that I prayed to God about, but we're taking it super slow. In the beginning he wasn't always vocal about his feelings, so I would play this song all the time til I finally got up the nerve to put all my cards on the table and all him how he felt lol. Luckily, the feelings were mutual 😊.

6. Nicki Minaj- The Night Is Still Young

'How dare we sit quietly

And watch the world pass us by?'

This song always reminds me of my favorite kinda summer:

Getting dressed up

Linking up with my girls

And just having a lot of fun!

Nicki always ends up on my summer playlist and I think it's because I love the way that she owns who she is, shortcomings and all. That's something we all can aspire to.

7. James Fortune- Identity

'Wasted enough of my destiny

Trying to please those who really didn't care about me
I'm trusting you, cause you hold the plans just for my life'

The more I become comfortable in my skin, the more push back I get from certain people. I've realized it's because they aren't fully comfortable in their skin, so it's easier to try and put someone else back in their bondage than try to break out of their own. When I have those moments of self doubt, I always play this song. This song always reminds me that I'm created in His image, so as long as I continue to search for my identity in Him, I'll be fine.

8. BJ the Chicago Kid- Jeremiah/World Needs More Love

'Since God is love

The whole world needs more love'

So ever since I saw him in concert this summer, I've kinda been in love with BJ!! He's real R&B and I need that in my life! His whole album is amazing, but when I heard this song, it resonated with me. I always think of God as love, so when I hear love songs, I always replace the word 'love' with 'God'. So basically he's saying that since God is love, the world need more God. I agree with that.

S/N- if you look BJ up and like what you hear, go listen to Elhae. He was BJ's opening act and he's amazing too. He's a R&B singer who sings over trap beats. It's dope!!

9. Mali Music- I Believe

'So I choose to look on the brighter side...

In spite, of all the negativity I'm surrounded by

No it ain't perfect but that's alright
Cause His hand is on me ...
It's keeping me alive.'

Mali is another one I got to see over the summer and he's as soulful in person as he is on his album. When I went to his concert, it was around a particularly hard time that I was trying to push through. Hearing him sing this song live felt like a breath of fresh air. It felt like God was reminding me that He had me and I needed that lifeline...

10. Beyoncé- Freedom

'I break chains all by myself

Won't let my freedom rot in hell
Hey! I'ma keep running
Cause a winner don't quit on themselves.'

I love Beyoncé!! I don't know if I'll go as far as to say that I'm apart if the beyhive, but I'm definitely a fan. When Lemonade first came out, I watched just like everyone else. Just about every song on the album has something positive on it, but when I heard the above lyric, I got goosebumps. That's exactly how I feel!! My freedom lies in me being me unapologetically and I'm going to continue to keep my freedom at any cost.✊🏾✊🏾

11. Beyoncé- Formation

'I like my baby hair with baby hair and afros

I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils.'

This song came out during black history month and I was so happy!! Very rarely do we get to see main stream artists embrace the things that make them black. It's important for little black girls to see it and I'm glad that Beyoncé did it 🐝🍋.

12. Ingrid- Double Pedigree

'People only gon' do the.. that you allow them to

So allow me to command respect, intellect and affection.'

As much as I love Nicki, I'm glad that I have other girl rappers to listen to. This whole song is her just affirming herself and I love that because we need to see more than one type of woman in hip hop. When I'm feeling myself, this is a song I turn on.

13. Jor'Dan Armstrong- So For Real

'Don't keep your mind on your haters

Just keep your eye to the maker.'

He was one of Kierra Sheard's opening acts and his energy was crazy!! I always appreciate artists who can bring you the gospel in a new way. This song is super dope if you are trying to introduce Christian rap to someone who only listens to tap music lol.

14. Missy Elliot- WTF

'Ugh, I'm so far ahead of ya'll, man I'm on top of the stars

I don't care none of you are, blah-blah-blah-blah

You best to go rewrite your bars.'

So Missy Elliot is a perfect example of why representation matters. As a little chubby black girl, I used to get so excited when Missy came out with a new video. I loved to dance, so seeing her videos made me feel like I could do it too and her confidence always oozed through the screen. When this song came out, I had it on repeat for a week. It took me back to being that little girl in awe of what Missy was blessing us with. She will forever be one of my favorite artists!

15. Ms. 007- Important

'I’m fat. You ugly. I can fix fat; you can’t fix ugly!'

I have a ratchet side that I keep tucked away and only show to those I trust. If you've made it all the way to the end, then you've earned a snippet of my ratchet music selection lol. Do not judge me, but this is my birthday song!! I love fat girls who are super confident and you can't tell her anything lol. She's super dope! This is probably the most colorful song language wise, just fyi lol.

So there it is!! This year has been all other the place, but I'm thankful for every lesson learned. This year is the foundation for an even better one and I'm super excited about 27!!

Happy Ki Day to me!!🎉🎊
